Ancient Egypt, by Claire Alwin from Mrs. Peeters room

Over the past month we have been learning about Ancient Egypt. We learned that the Nile River was very important to early settlement and that it ended in a fertile valley by the Mediterranean Sea.
Did you know that Hatshepsut was the first female pharaoh? Hatshepsut ruled from 1473 to 1458 B.C.E. In order to be treated with respect she filled her government with loyal advisors, dressed like a boy and wore a beard! Ramses the second ruled from 1290 to 1224 B.C.E. Ramses the second was known for his strong military leadership and monuments. Ramses had 100 wives and over 100 children! Khufu was responsible for building the pyramid of Giza and organizing and feeding the 1000’s of workers. Senusret ruled from 1971 to 1926 B.C.E and was known for controlling gold, copper and gem mines and for building the White Chapel. The white chapel was deconstructed by a later Pharaoh to build a monument of his own.
We also learned that men were the head of the household and that women raised kids and managed their home.
